What is excavation?

To excavate means to dig a hole in the ground, in order to clear space to build a structure or landscape a garden space.

We primarily work with excavation for construction and landscaping purposes.

However, we can service other excavation types such as:

  • Removing trees & scrub
  • Rock breaking through rock and concrete
  • Levelling out driveways, houses and building pads

Sydney is famous for its sandstone and bedrock which needs to be evaluated if there appears to be any located onsite. An excavation job containing bedrock will generally take longer to remove and cost more than just dirt.

Many new home landscaping designs will require excavation for land levelling, lot clearing, new lawns, and retaining walls.

How to hire an excavator

You pay peanuts, you get monkeys, so they say.

But this rings true, especially when it comes to hiring tradesmen. Unfortunately, there are too many unlicensed cowboys out there undercutting quotes to get the job, only to then overpromise and underdeliver.

These tradesmen don’t get repeat business but instead move on to their next unwitting client/victim.

Wayne’s Landscaping & Excavation are no such cowboys. For us, the customer is number one and delivering on our promise is crucial to maintaining the solid reputation that Wayne’s landscaping has cultivated for over thirty years in the business.

Excavation can be both tricky and dangerous. If you don’t know what you’re doing the chance of cutting through electrical cables or damaging sewerage systems is too great a risk.

An unprepared and unqualified digger can cause catastrophic damage to your home. And if they aren’t properly insured, chances are you’ll never see them again.

When it comes down to it, paying just that little bit extra is worth the peace of mind of having a fully qualified professional do the work knowing that you’re covered should anything go wrong.

Don’t be swayed by the undercutting cowboy with the cheap quote only to add on extras later on blowing the cost of the initial quote right out.

  • Fully licensed, qualified & insured
  • Known & trusted in the local community
  • Warranties & 100% customer satisfaction provided

What to expect

At all times we believe in safety first as we inspect your site before we dig to make sure we are 100% certain it’s safe to begin excavations.

For both yourselves, ourselves and your property we follow these iron clad steps.

1. Plan: We review your house plans to locate any underground pipes and infrastructure.

2. Assess: We mark-up the site locations that need to be avoided or treated with caution to avoid causing unnecessary damage and

3. Excavate: We move or remove earth, rock, and other organic matter.

Dug up dirt can either be used to level out a backyard, create a garden bed or removed off-site, depending on your needs.

Questions to ask before you hire an excavator

  • Determine what services your excavator offers to see if they are the right fit for your project. It’s also important to gauge whether they are experienced enough for the scope of your project.

Most excavators will have experience in the following areas:

    • Specializing in underground car park basements
    • Digging out swimming pools, trenches, holes and foundations
    • Removing trees & scrub
    • Rock breaking through rock and concrete
    • Asbestos removal
    • Demolition and clearing of sheds, units, houses and buildings
    • Levelling out driveways, houses and building pads

Wayne’s landscaping & Excavation offer an obligation free consultation. From obligation free consultation and site-evaluation through to the excavation and signing off on the customer 100% satisfaction.

  • Most excavators will have a portfolio of work. If they don’t, consider it a red flag. Whether it be on their website, social media or in print, make sure you see evidence of past work. Legitimate client testimonials are also a good sign.

Also, check out their credentials, evidence of the training, license, etc. Degrees from accredited TAFE and memberships in professional organisations such as the NSW Department of Fair Trading are also a positive sign.

As a general rule of thumb, the less information readily available about your excavator, the more cautious you should be.

  • Some landscape designers will typically come over to your property, listen to you and your excavation needs.

Don’t expect all initial consults to be free of charge. The reality is it’s two hours of a professional’s time. However, a common practice is for excavators to subtract the consult fee from the cost of the design if you end up going with them.

We value our customers and offer 100% obligation free quotes with site assessments included where required. Speak to a member of our friendly team to arrange yours!

  • Get to know the excavation process from the get-go so that you’ll know what to expect once the project commences. If the response is vague then ask for more details. Basically, make sure the excavator has a process. It should go something like this:

Plan – we review your house plans to locate any underground pipes and infrastructure.
Assess – we mark-up the site locations that need to be avoided or treated with caution to avoid causing unnecessary damage and
Excavate – we move or remove earth, rock, and other organic matter.

  • Crystal clear communication regarding the excavation cost of the project and your budget is crucial. Ask for a range of cost. If it doesn’t fit your budget then it’s your responsibility as a client to be honest about it to your excavator.

  • The time it takes to excavate depends on the size, scope and complexity of the project. Always allow for unexpected setbacks during installation such as weather. Instead of asking an excavator to have your excavation complete by a certain date, ask for an estimated range for which the project can be completed.

  • It’s important to know whether your excavator has any guarantees or warranties for the work. Most licensed professionals will provide you with warranties. This is a good sign and will offer you the priceless peace of mind.
