5 Cheap and Natural Ways to Kill Your Weeds

Nothing ruins your yard or garden quite like weeds do. Those uninvited guests that rob your plants of nutrients and space. Fear not, we have a solution! The best way to kills your weeds AND save money is to make use of some home-made remedies. If you’re in need of a little inspiration, then look no further. Below we discuss 5 cheap and natural ways to kill your weeds.

1. Use Newspaper

The newspaper will smother weeds that have already begun to sprout, as well as preventing the growth of new weeds. It does this by blocking sunlight and oxygen from reaching the soil. Simply throw down 10 sheets layered of newspaper and cover with an inch of mulch. If the weeds begin to grow within the mulch, then it will be necessary to add more layers of newspaper. This will eventually will break down and nourish the soil.

2. Vinegar

Vinegar is a cheap product to purchase, and most of us have it in the home already. The acetic acid in 5% vinegar can suck the life out of plant leaves. It works best with young plants with immature roots. Don’t forget to cover any precious plants before you spray as vinegar can also be an opportunist killer.

3. Soap

The oil contained in soap can break down hairy or waxy weed surfaces, making them vulnerable. Therefore, by adding a few drops of liquid dish detergent to vodka or vinegar sprays, you can keep the solution on leaves. Another useful tip is that the soap will make the leaves shiny, which will help you keep track of what you’ve sprayed.

4. Baking soda

Another cheap product we always find at the back of our kitchen cupboards (remember all those cakes we said we were going to bake!). This is a safe way to keep grasses and weeds from growing in the cracks of your paved driveways, patios and walkways. All you need to do is sprinkle some baking soda onto the concrete and sweep it into the cracks.

5. Boiling water

Last but not least, another tip for natural and cheap weed removal is simply boiling water. After you’ve finished your morning cuppa, take the kettle outside and pour the boiling water on weeds. This will burn them up. It’s a great way to target walkway and driveway weeds.
